When looking for a Metropolitan Birmingham home to purchase, it’s important to remember that the sellers decorative style may be vastly different from your own.  Therefore be prepared to not get caught up in cosmetic and focus on the structure and layout itself.

When touring homes you’ll find homes that are beautifully decorated while others……..well not so much.  The sellers decor may range from elegant, eclectic, dark and dreary or may just lack any sense of effort at all.

But let me caution you, when you set out to purchase a home, you and your Realtor® sit down and talk about what style of home you want, where you want that home to be located and what features you want that home to have.

What you probably don’t have on that list is  “I’m looking for a home where the sellers tastes in everything mimics my own.”  If this is on your list, then you may as well add the proverbial needle in the haystack.  This is just a reminder that when you go into a home and the seller has a decor that you could not fathom living in, remember you are viewing the home because your agent did an MLS search based on the “features” of the house that you want NOT the personal decorating style of the seller.

Just remember to look past that things that you can change and focus on the features of the house itself.  By doing so, you may end up buying a home that’s a real gem, that others dismissed because they couldn’t see the strength of the home’s potential because it was masked by the sellers decor.
